Fourth graders had a chance to hear from Dr. Edie Gair, a geologist with the Department of Environmental Protection. She currently works in the Safe Drinking Water division and spoke to the students about plate tectonics, volcanoes, earthquakes, and layers of the earth. Dr. Gair showed the students various types of volcanic, igneous, and metamorphic rock, along with fossils

When entering White Deer this morning, students and staff were given the opportunity to sign our "I Pledge to be KIND" banner. Today is World Kindness day, and we have been celebrating this week with fun themes for each day. Each person that signed the banner got a sticker to wear for the day showing that they Pledge to be KIND!

White Deer 4th and 5th grade students created cards for local veterans during Health Class this month. The cards will be handed to local veterans along with meals at Geisinger Medical Center on November 11th. Geisinger serves nearly 4000 free meals to veterans in communities across Central and Northeast PA in November. Cards made by local students, thanking our veterans for their service are included with every single meal given. Our student’s participation in this program helps to ensure each veteran gets an individual note of thanks and serves as an activity to support teaching our youth about the value of service to our country.   Tina McDowell is the Director of Volunteer Services at Geisinger and has coordinated this for our students.

5th grade guest speaker, Carlos Perez was born a full Mopan Maya and is from Belize. He talked about the early cities/architecture; foods; social structure; and how the Mayan children lived. He even taught the students a few words in his native tongue. Fifth graders are studying ancient Maya, Inca, and Aztec culture in their current CKLA (Core Knowledge Language Arts) unit.
